The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is a non-profit environmental defense group. They focus on advocating for worldwide environmental protection while using economic principles to fully realize their goals. The EDF is led by professionals, and scientific evidence is at the core of everything they do.
History
The EDF was started by a group of lawyers who worked to get DDT (an insecticide that weakened egg shells and was responsible for the near extinction of bald eagles) banned. They formally organized in the 70s and have been working to defend the environment ever since. Their later work includes:
Advocating for the removal of lead from gasoline to prevent lead poisoning in children
Partnering with large organizations to decrease their waste production
Working with various oil companies to reduce pollution from oil and gas production
Scientific Work
The EDF relies on science to guide their work. Their scientists collaborate with universities and industry partners to conduct large-scale research studies. These studies have been especially helpful in identifying methane's role in climate change and developing methods to detect and reduce its abundance.
Economic Work
The EDF recognizes that money has a lot to do with the world's current climate and pollution issues. It is often far cheaper to rely on fossil fuels and disposable packaging than their environmentally friendly counterparts. This provides an economic incentive for being environmentally unfriendly. The EDF is working to reverse the situation, encouraging policymakers and community leaders to place economic incentives on environmentally friendly practices.
Support
If you are looking for a way to support the improvement of the environment, donating to the EDF is an excellent way to do so. They have a long history of impactful work that achieves real results. Donations can be made on their website at edf.org.
